Political platform statement

Why I am running for this office: As a child raised by a single mother who grew up with few resources and overcame many obstacles, I understand children living with chronic stress, poverty, and historical trauma. As a student who graduated from Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) and went on to get a master’s degree in Education, I know what a quality SPPS education and supportive schools can do for our youth. As a single parent of two SPPS graduates, I am committed to keeping our children at the center of the decisions we make, acknowledging when we make mistakes, and focusing on continuous improvement. As a practicing social worker, I work every day with children and families to help them navigate public systems and find success. I will continue to use my experiences to change the district from within to better serve our students and families. As a product of SPPS, an active community member, and as a 26+ year professional educator, I am a reflection of the children and families we serve. I will continue to bring a balance of both professional and personal experience to the board, and I will always put children first. As a current school board member and the board chair, I know that our work is not done as systems change takes time. I remain focused on keeping children, their outcomes, and equity at the center of our decision making. Finally, I will continue to work to build trust between of the board, administration, staff, and families of SPPS. We must continue to challenge and engage the system to have more responsive and reflective engagement so that all kids and families are able to navigate within SPPS and be successful.
